Why You Don’t Need Coaching
As a Life Coach this may seem like a very strange thing for me to say, but it is true. You will never need life coaching; you can move past your fears and do incredible things in your life all by yourself: your future will be exactly what it is going to be; you can win that gold medal, get that big promotion, take your company to great heights; even bend spoons!
Your future will be anything that you make it…….. and yet…….there will be fears that slow you down, problems that keep cropping up, you will plateau; it is human nature. The deepest part of us is there to keep us safe; to protect us and so you will at times be battling against that nature and it will be hard; it will seem like you are going round in circles but, you will be able to get through, come out the other side and be proud of what you have accomplished. But,
What if there was more…..a LOT more?
What if…. you create everything that you imagined and yet it doesn’t feel like enough?
What if… you get to your destination and realise that you don’t really want to be there? That it may seem amazing to your friends and family, but it doesn’t fulfil you.
What if, everything you were to accomplish in your life is only the tip of the iceberg?
We can do a lot on our own, but we will always be limited by the way we see things and that is informed by everything we have experienced and learned up to this moment. By ourselves we tend to make linear changes with the occasional growth spurt; with coaching those growth spurts can be frequent and exponential!
If you work for a large company and want to progress it might make sense that getting the job one step on from where you are is the thing to do; that is the natural progression, but what if you could actually go for the job 3 or 4 steps ahead?
Have you ever had a boss and thought to yourself that you could do what they do? That, when you look at the actual day to day job you know you are capable but you don’t have the confidence to lead a team or to speak in board meetings or give a press conference. Well, what if you are coached so that you develop the abililites of a powerful leader, what difference is that going to make? Something that seems like years away can take months.
You could already be a great leader and work among other great leaders. Do you wait in line until it is your turn or do you develop the skills you require to leave them standing?
You are capable of so much more than you are doing right now…….yes, YOU!!
How many hours have you spent exploring what you would love to create in this world? Most people spend very little time thinking about what they really want (except day dreaming) and even fewer explore deeply why they want it.
One of the things I love about coaching is that when we have a conversation and take real time out to imagine what your future could be, what you would love it to be in a perfect world and what your deeper reasons are for wanting it, we discover ways that you can start living that life now. No matter how big the dream or how far away it may seem, there are always steps you can take now and by taking them start living it.
I am fortunate to coach some people who are doing amazing things in the world and even though they are outwardly achieving so much, inwardly it often feels ordinary. There is a secret of very successful people; that to them it doesn’t feel like enough. On the surface they are often envied with what they are accomplishing and yet when we delve under that surface so much is missing.
There are many reasons for this, but an important one is that they see the world through their own lens and can’t see beyond it. They feel like they “should” do things a certain way because it is a great opportunity, even if inside it leaves them feeling flat. Someone said to me recently that if he just puts up with it for a year or two, then he can do what he is really passionate about. He had an opportunity to do what he loves now and said that if he did that he would wake up every day inspired, excited and happy and yet he was still torn between that and the decision that “made sense”.
If you have a choice between loving life now (and every day) and putting that off for 2 years with the hope that the opportunity enables you to be loving your life even more in 2 years, what would you do?
Many people will choose the “great opportunity” instead of loving life now because they are scared of missing out, but he doesn’t know for sure he will be alive in 2 years and if he is would have been sentencing himself to a bland, boring, depressing life for 2 years (his words) with only a possibility that there will be a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. But, just like the rainbow, there is no pot of gold; it is a mirage.
Many people also feel like they “should” be able to do it on their own and get frustrated that they can’t. “I feel stupid because I shouldn’t need help” is something I have heard many times, but why is that? Why do we feel that we can do it all on our own? I have spent years facing my fears and living into my passion and in the past 6 have put in thousands of hours of deliberate practice into it; pushing myself and what I am capable of more and more and learning how to help other people do the same. So, why should someone who hasn’t done anything like that feel like they should?
I also know what it feels like to think that it should come naturally; that if I need help I have somehow failed but, that is a lie. No matter who you are, you can always do more with help and with powerful coaching you can do a hell of a lot more! What seems impossible one day can become normal the next; the limits of what are possible keep expanding; the goal posts keep moving (you keep moving them).
If you have profound coaching there is no need to focus on goals; sure have goals so you have a direction to head in, but when you are working with the right coach for you; the goals will change almost as often as you can think of them; what seems like the destination today becomes a beginners step on your journey tomorrow.
The coaching relationship is like no other. If I am your coach it means that I care about you and believe in you deeply! It means that I want what you want; your dream is something I want to help you create because it excites me.
If you are committed to making it happen I will be there with you.
Coaching is powerful, it can take you from where you are beyond anything you have yet imagined. I am passionate about coaching and about being coached. Coaching has been life changing for me, many times over and continues to be.
You don’t need coaching, but without it you are missing out on one of the most amazing things that life has to offer.
